Cherríe Moraga is the Artist in Residence in the Department of Drama and CSRE (Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity) at Stanford University. She is a core faculty member for the IDA (Identity, Diversity and Aesthetics) Program, which offers a special emphasis on People of Color Arts theory and practice.
Students from 2009 Indigenous Identity in Diaspora: People of Color Arts Practice in North America 2010 COURSE OFFERINGS . . .WINTER (January - March) Drama 17N 3 units. Salt of the Earth: Docudrama in (Latino)América.An introduction to “Docudrama” as a form of factually based, politically-motivated, dramatic writing (film and theater), related to the Chican@/Latin@ experience. The 1954 Black-listed film, “Salt of the Earth,” will serve as the point of departure for examining the more than half-century of Latin@-oriented Docudrama that followed. Students will create a short original docudrama at the quarter’s end. DRAMA 177/277. Writing for Performance: The FundamentalsThis course introduces students to the basic elements of playwriting and creative experimentation for the stage. Topics include: character development, conflict and plot construction, staging and setting, and play structure. Script analysis of works by contemporary playwrights may include: Marsha Norman, Patrick Shanley, August Wilson, Paula Vogel, Luis Alfaro and others. Table readings of one-act length work required by quarter’s end. SPRING (April - June)Drama 178/278 Intensive Playwriting Intermediate level study of fundamentals of playwriting through an intensive play development process. Course emphasizes visual scripting for the stage and play revision. Script analysis of works by contemporary playwrights may include: Suzan-Lori Parks, Tony Kushner, Adrienne Kennedy, Octavio Solis, María Irene Fornes and others. Table readings of full length work required by quarter’s end. Drama 355M “The (W)Rite to Remember: Performance and Xicana-Indigenous Thought Graduate Seminar. An intensive exploration of Indigenous Thought and Aesthetics as they pertain to the performance and ceremonial practices of Xicana and other Indigenous/African American women artists and spirit practitioners.
